"Supreme Sacrifice" May Meeting

WARREN HARDING of Foxboro (left, kneeling) was a member of Bombing Squadron 109, the first American unit to land on Saipan in 1944. Listed as missing in action after his plane went down, his body was later recovered on the island of ChiChi Jima but details of his death remained a mystery for decades following the war. Town Historian Jack Authelet will share many details about Warren's heroic military service and how his story finally became public in his presentation "The Supreme Sacrifice" at the Foxboro Historical Society meeting on May 27.
The May meeting – and final meeting of the season – of the Foxboro Historical Society will feature Foxboro Town Historian Jack Authelet in a special Memorial Day program entitled "The Supreme Sacrifice."
Since that meeting comes immediately following Foxboro's Memorial Day observance, "The Supreme Sacrifice" will be a fitting extension of our tributes the day before.
Jack will be speaking on the supreme sacrifice that so many young men – and one woman – were called upon to make when their nation called. He will also speak of the sacrifice of some families who lost loved ones and for whom the war never ended.
He will share insights into the lives and service of those who made the Supreme Sacrifice in each of the conflicts and others who would have been casualties if not for most incredible twists of fate.
Of particular interest will be two compelling World War II stories that remained mostly hidden for decades that have not only come to life in the past few years through the most incredible set of circumstances, but continue to be fleshed out on a nearly weekly basis. The presentation will be profusely illustrated.
The Foxboro Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, May 27 at 7:30 pm in the Fuller Room (lower level) of the Boyden Library in Foxboro center.
Meetings of the Historical Society are free, the public is welcome, and refreshments are served.
